BOROUGH ELECTIONS.

MAYOR AND COUNCILLORS STANDING.

MR. MARSHALL’S WORK. The present mayor of Paeroa and the present members of the Borough Council with the exception of Cr. H. H. Bray, who is very ill, will be offering their services for a further term.

At last week’s council meeting Cr. E. Edwards congratulated the mayor on hi.s work for the past term. His efforts had been the main part of the works of the Borough. Councillors appreciated the co-operation of the mayor with them in all matters. All councillors therefore desired to see Mi’ Marshall allow himself to be nominated for the office of mayor and on their behalf he would ask Mr Marshall to consent.

■Cr. Flatt endorsed this and said that the times had not been normal and had not required normal handling. He had seen a great deal of what Mr Marshall had done and while he realised that Mr Marshall may feel that he should not continue to hold the office, he was sure there was a general desire that he continue to serve and to give the town the benefit of his experience in these difficult times.

In reply the mayor expressed thanks for the generous references to his work. Especially did he wish to express thanks to Cr. Edwards for the reference to the help given by Mrs Marshall. He wished to thank councillors for their very great assistance and loyal co-operation, particularly in the past two years. He was sensible of the fact that we were passing through difficult times but this state of affairs had been going on for a long time. However, there were works in hand which it would be difficult, to hand over and as it was the desire that he continue he would have pleasure in agreeing to the request. It must be definitely understood that this would be the last occasion. He was encouraged to carry on by the knowledge that the old councillors were again going to offer their services .
