VICTORIA CENTENARY.

This Year’s Celebrations

Special attention will be given in, 1934 to preparations for the celebration of Victoria’s 100th birthday. The festivities will begin in October, 1934, and will be designed to attract visitors from overseas. It is expected that a Royal Prince will tour the States. One great event is an international air race from England | to Melbourne for £15,000, and there will also be other air races. The great horse-races — Melbourne and Caulfield Cups—will be for prizes of at least £lO,OOO apiece; there will be prizes of £5OOO for international golf matches and also, probably, prizes almost as rich for tennis. Exhibitions, pageants, a musical festival and social functions in variety are on the programme. It is hoped that Melbourne will present for the occasion a microcosm of all that is best in Australia, and it is intended that each country centre will be converted into an appropriate halting place for extensive tours.
