TOTAL OF 83,780 HOLDINGS NEARLY HALF DAIRY FARMS The agricultural returns for 1932-33 show that the total number of holdings was 83,780, compared with 82,963 in the preceding year. There were 38,545 holdings classified as dairy farms, 14,730 as sheep and cattle grazing farms, 5240 as mixed agricultural and grazing farms and 7341 as mixed dairying and grazing farms. Of the total wheat area of 302,531 acres, Canterbury province grew 235,505 and Otago 40,411. Canterbury’s proportion of the oats crop (for threshing) was 60,895 acres; Otago, 21,975; and Southland, 27,272; for chaff the respective figures were 129,740, 49,547 and 35,362. Of the barley area of 16,336 acres, Canterbury grew 7543, Otago 4280 and Marlborough 1700. The potato area of 24,605 acres was principally grown in Canterbury—--12,66.I—Auckland1 —Auckland 3088, Wellington 2582, Otago 2023, Southland 1583. Turnips were grown on an area of 410,034 acres. Canterbury headed the list with 126,554 acres, Southland 84,114, Otago 82,648, Auckland 50,246, Wellington 31,337 acres.
Agricultural tractors number 4972, compared with 4856 in 1932 and 5023 in 1931.
