“CLEAN UP” WEEK.

ACTIVITY IN PAEROA. UTILISATION OF GARBAGE. The Paeroa Borough Council has cause to be gratified with the manner ; n which the business people, house holders and Borough workmen have co-operated during the past week to make a complete clean up of the town by the removal of the rubbish which has accumulated about business and private premises during the past ten years since the last “clean up ’ of this nature. All the week four Borough carts have been continually employed collecting piles of old garbage, contained in sacks, boxes, and various other containers, from where they had been placed out on the edges of the bootpaths to await the carts. So great has been the call upon the carts employed that it may be found necessary to continue operations next week. The carts will continue cn the advertised routes and will re-traverse the ground to pick up any rubbish which has had to be left behind during the past few days. All the rubbish has gone to the municipal rubbish dump on the Paeroa school reserve, where a hollow is being filled in to make the section level. Of course, the rubbish is covered over with soil in’ order to prevent it becoming offensive. Pipes are also laid in the gully before filling takes place, in order 1 to provide efficient drainage for the area. Thus in a very short time instead of the school reserve being an ugly, useless gully, it will be transformed into a splendid levnl playing area for the school. The thoughtfulness of the executive officers of the town in thus organising the work to the best advantage must earn the appreciation of ratepayers. The expense of using the Borough drays and workmen, of piping the gully, and of covering the dump can not be cavilled at, considering the great benefits derived. The cleanliness of Paeroa has frequently been commented upon by visitors; now as the result of “clean-up week” the back yards and out-of-the-way places will be just as clean as those places which are always open to the public view.
