TENNIS.

PLAINS ASSOCIATION.

OPENING DAY WET. Saturday afternoon, the opening of the Hauraki Plains Tennis Association’s inter-club competition proved very disappointing indeed. Only two clubs were able, through various reasons, to carry on with the games. Patetonga visited Waitakaruru and, after a strenuous afternoon, which, for so early in the season, provided a very creditable display of tennis, was defeated by the narrow margin of seven matches to six. Results are as follows, Patetonga (the visiting club) being mentioned first in each case: — Men’s Singles: J. Duffy, 2, lost to G. Griffith, 9; G. Shirley, 0, lost to A. Otter, 9; F. Pulman, 7, lost to G. Paton, 9; H. Taylor, 4, lest to S. McClune, 9. Ladies’ Singles: Miss B. Duffy, 7, defeated Miss M. Beaver, 0; Miss C. Hunter, 7, defeated Miss M. Elliott, 4. Combined Doubles: G. Reid and Miss D. Hunter, 5, lost to J. Adlam and Miss D. Peters, 7; C. Reid and Miss B. Duffy, 7, defeated G. Beaver and Miss S. Pulman, 6. Men’s Doubles: J. Duffy and G. Shirley, 0, lost to A- Otter and G. Griffiths, 9; H. Plummer and H. Taylor, 7, lost to S. McClune and G. Paton, 9; G. Reid and C. Reid, 9, defeated Adlam and Beaver, 7. Ladies’ Doubles; Misses B. Duffy and M. Duffy, 7, defeated Misses M. Beaver and M. Elliott, 1; Misses D. Hunter and C. Hunter, 7, defeated Misses D. Peters and S. Pulman, 4. HOPAI WITHDRAWS. Hopai has withdrawn as a team in the Association’s inter-club competition, although it will remain as an affiliated club. It is understood that lack of lady players to make up a full strength team has been the cause of the withdrawal. Hopai's place, howfever. will be filled by Kopuarahi, which is entering as an inter-club competing team. It is understood that the Kopuarahi team will occupy, in the draw, the position left vacant by Hopai's withdrawal and that although the arrangements, and weather, did not allow of the first competition game to be played on Saturday last, Turua has been appointed to meet Kopuarahi at the end of the round.

NGATEA V. KEREPEEHI. The Ngatea v. Kerepeehi matches, A and B, which occupied third position in Saturday’s draw, were not played on account of weather. While scarcely a drop of rain fell at Waitakaruru, the Ngatea courts were inundated and rain also fell at Kerepeehi, rendering play inadvisable. These games were postponed, qpd will be played later in the round.
