Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY MONDAY, AUGUST 17, 1931. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Very satisfactory bookings have been made for the Thames Valley Operatic Society’s presentation of “Princess Ju Ju” in the Aurora Theatre this evening, and the indications are that the company will face a crowded house.

In last issue of the “Gazette” a telegraphed report from Opotiki stated that the score of' the Thames Valley v. Bay of Plenty match was 23 to 5. The actual score was 18 points to five, a mistake being made in the despatching of the report.

The Paeroa Miniature Rifle Club has been donated two handsome trophies by Mr E. A. Pearson, a member of the club. The first of these will be shot for to-morrow night in the local Drill Hall. There will be no entrance fee. A second and third prize will also be provided by a sweepstake of sixpence each for those who wish to compete for these last two prizes.

Playing in the Paeroa Hockey Association’s competition on Saturday last, Hikutaia beat Waratah by eight goals to two,' the scorers being V. Brown (4), M. Turner (3), fid J. Alley (1), for Hikutaia, and V. Shand (2), for Waratah., In a friendly match True Blue Treat Kowhai, s—o, the scorers being A. Neild (2), R. Gamble (2), and M. O’NeiL(l).

During Saturday’s match at Ngatea three forwards raced in goal together for the ball. They dived, slid along the ground and disappeared with the ball into a ditch on the dead ball line. A moment later they reappeared, but the difficulty was for the referee to decide who had forced the ball. However, the defending side received the benefit of the doubt and a “twenty-five” was awarded.

Fpotball matches on the Paeroa Domain were again late in commencing on Saturday last, and to this reason was due the ordering off -the field by a referee of a whole team. A junior game, which' would have concluded before 3 p.m.- had it commenced on time was, using the field at 3.25 p.m., and during a stoppage on account of a player injured the senior representatives ran on and lined up to commence their long overdue game.

Speaking at the reunion of the Te Kuiti branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Colonel Duigan ’stated that the full quota for the Hauraki Regiment had been obtained under the voluntary system. Te Kuiti had also provided its quota for -the Waikato Regiment. ‘ Colonel Duigan stated it had, been particularly gratifying to note'the stamp of young men offering for voluntary training.

The resignation of Mr S. J. Laughlin as representative on the Thames Harbour Board for the combined counties was received by the Ohinemuri County Council at its meeting on Thursday last. It was accepted with regret and the Council decided that a letter be sent thanking Mr Laughlin for his long/and valued service.

The encroachment by spectators on to the playing fields at football matches at the Paeroa Domain has been a bad feature of matches ail the season but owing to the small attendances of spectators the inconvenience caused players, line umpires and other spectators has not been great. With a larger attendance, as was the case on Saturday last, the position became so bad that those spectators who sat on the seats or stood behind the wire lost sight of the game for long periods, and naturally they severely crictised the administrators of the game during these periods. The Rugby Union would be well advised to give the matter close attention if it wishes to hold the goodwil l of the public].- Another matter which it' should give attention to are the seats provided for spectators. Through having been stood upon many of these have become broken, and all of them are so muddy that spectators now think twice about using them to sit upon. The annual general meeting of the Paeroa Lawn Tennis Club will be held in the Centenary Hall to-morrow evening. In the Thames-Hauraki Basketball Association’s competition on Saturday last the Ngatea High School team beat the Thames College Old Girls B team by 25 to 4.
