WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

KOPUARAHI. The monthly meeting of the Kopuarahi Women’s Institute was held recently,' Mrs Geo. Newsham ..presiding over a good attendance of members. The roll call, -which took the form of a. competition, “Something new from something old,” resulted in a splendid variety of useful articles being displayed, the prize going to Mrs J. C. Miller, for a pair of child’s slippers cleverly made from a felt hat. Mrs Baigent gave a resume of the business dealt with at the Hauraki Group meeting, held in Turua recently, and a general discussion followed. Mrs J. B. McMillan explained a method of preserving apples by the use of sulphur, and exhibited auples treated a year ago, which were still in a perfect state of preservation. A demonstration of dress fitting by Mrs Baigent was much appreciated by members.

A competition, arranged by Mrs F. Kneebone, caused much amusement, the prize (donated by Mrs Kneehone.) being won by Miss Hale. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Candy, Hale, Heenan and Bowen.

NGATEA. A very good attendance of members and visitors were present at the monthly meeting of the Ngatea Women’s Institute yesterday afternoon. The roll call, “My First Experience on the Plains,” proved very interesting, though many preferred to pay the fine rather than. revive old unpleasant recollections.' A demonstration on smocking, given by Mrs C. Foster, was instructive, and followed with great interest by members of the Institute. The question of undertaking the building of a social hall, which would serve as a ladies’ rest room for Ngatea, and a meeting place for the Ngatea Girl Guides, was discussed. The matter was left to the president to investigate and report. Very appreciative letters of thanks were received' from the Auckland City Mission, acknowledging receipt of the donation of clothing and of cash. \ _ The Jubilee Institute for the Blind wrote expressing its appreciation of the efforts of the Institute to raise funds on its behalf by the sale of baskets. Hostesses of the afternoon were Mesdames J. Constantine. L. Cotter, J. Costello and M. Costello, who dispensed a very enjoyable afternoon tea. The next meeting of the Institute will take the form of an open musical afternoon, to which members of . all Institutes in the district are invited. The roll call will be, “Sing, say, or pay,” for the regular meeting, which will be held half an hour earlier than the usual, in order to get through business before the visitors arrive. Hostesses for the afternoon will be Mesdames S. Coppins, J. Crockford, J. Dalgcly and H. Dalgety.
