PAEROA RUGBY UNION.

WEEKLY MEETING.. The usual weekly meeting of the Paeroa Rugby Union was held on Monday, evening. Mr W. E. Ward presided over Messrs J. Crosby,’ J. Brooks, E. G. Preston, E. P. Fathers, F. Diinwoodie, A. V. Keighley, W. Pearcey, W. Moore, and D. B. Currie (secretary). Transport of Teams. It was left in the hands of the secretary to obtain prices for the transport of the various teams competing in the Poland and Sharebrokers’ Cup fixtures. Application for Re-Grading. H. H. Vowles wrote asking that he be re-graded from the West Juniors to. West Third Grade. This was granted. Weight of Players. It was mentioned by the chairman that a request had been made last Saturday* that three of the West Third Grade players should be weighed, but that it had not been done. Mr Crosby said that the club secretaries must know well enough whether or not the boys were the right weight. Mr Preston said one of the school boys had been so badly knocked about that he would not be allowed to play again this season. The Union should see that the West Club carried out the rules. Mr Moore, said that the players should have been weighed as soon as the match had been finished. Mr Pearcey thought that the only way was to weigh players before matches. Mr Crosby moved, and it was carried, that the weighing of players be left in the hands of Messrs Preston, Brooks, and Knight. Registration. G. Edwards was registered as a member of the High School Old Boys Club. Seven-a-Side Tournament. • A letter was received from the Railway Club asking to be allowed to enter a team for the seven-a-side competition. It was moved by Mr Moore, and carried, that the team be accepted. Other nominations for the seven-a-side tournament were: West A and B, East A and B, Old Boys, and Railway. The draw was as follows: — Railway v. East B;-Winner to play East A; High School Old Boys ,v. West A; Winner to play West B. ; The playing* field was to be the ■ same size as usual. Presentation of Shield. Mr Pearcey advised that Mr Ellerington had donated a shield for the tournament. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Ellerington. Mr Brookes was authorised to purchase seven medals for the winning team in the competition. The following special rules were drawn up:— I. Spells of ten minutes duration; two minutes interval. 2. In case of a draw a further spell of five minutes and first touch down to count one point to opponents. 3. Stoppages for casualties not to exceed one minute in any one case. Turua Club. On behalf of the Turua Junior Football Club, Mr Tynan waited on the committee. Mr . Tynan said that the Turua Junior Club had had great difficulty in obtaining games. He said that, on behalf of the Turua team, he thanked the Union for allowing the team to play in the Paeroa Junior Competition. Mr Tynan asked if it would be possible for each Paeroa team to travel once to Tuma. The Tuma team would be prepared to travel on all ether occasions. It would mean a large expense for the Turua players if they had to travel every time, as the cost was 4s per player each time they came to Paeroa. Mr Preston said that probably the local team would be only too pleased to travel to Tuma once. It was decided to agree to the Turua Club’s proposal. Executive Committee. Two nominations were received for the member of the executive committee, and on a vote being taken Mr Pivott was elected. Draw for Saturday. Seniors: West v. Suburbs, at Hikutaia; East v. Tuma, at Paeroa, 3 p.m. Juniors: Suburbs v. Old Boys, 1.45 p.m., at Paeroa. East v. Turua, 3 p.m., at Paeroa. Third Grade: East v. School, 1.45 p.m., at Paeroa. Birch Cup and Peace Cup. Mr Crosby mentioned that there was no doubt that Paeroa had the players for a first class representative team, and suggested that the Paeroa Rugby Union should issue challenges for the Birch Cup and the Peace Cup. Mr Crosby asked other members their opinion. Mr Pearcey said that it was a very good idea, and unless some effort was made the cups would never come to Paeroa. Mr Fathers and Mr Moore endorsed these views. It was carried unanimously that the Paeroa Rugby Union should issue challenges for the Peace Cup and the Birch Cup immediately. HAURAKI PLAINS UNION. GENERAL MEETING HELD. The President, Mr H. T. Evans, presided over a general meeting ,of the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union delegates and club Secretaries last evening. Present were Messrs A. Cleave, G. McCowatt, W. Buchanan, H. Elvin, R. Rollings, H. Tynan, J. Lyes, C. Caie, C. Molloy, W. Williams and the secretary (P. Foster). Team Managers. The appointment of team managers had been deferred by the management committee until there was a full meeting of the Union, and last even-

ing Mr T. Evans was ’ appointed to manage the senior team and Mr W. Buchanan the junior team. Affiliation. The prime object of the general meeting was to discuss the ruling of the Union given on April 28, in regard to the payment of affiliation. The rule stated: “That affiliation be paid before the third Saturday, defaulting teams, to be disqualified from the competition.” Three teams had paid before the required date, and two had paid before the fourth Saturday. On looking up previous rulings, however, which had been drawn up and confirmed in conjunction with the Thames Valley Union in 1929, it was discovered “that no rule of the Union shall be repealed, or altered, and no new rule shall be made save by a majority of those present . . . and at least seven days notice of the intention to propose, repeal, or alter any rule, shall be given to the secretary of the Union.” And also that, “such subscriptions,” referring to affiliation, “shall be payable to the secretary of the Union not later than the 30th day of May in each, year.” The rule, therefore, passed on April 28, was out of order, having been instituted without notice of motion, and the old rulings held for the year. Thus all teams which had paid before the end of the month were included in the competition. An addition to the resolution stating “that affiliation be paid before the third Saturday,” laid down “that last year’s liabilities, owing by clubs’ in respect of affiliation and insurance be waived.” - This was also out of order, but Mr H. Elvin gave notive to the meeting of his intention to move to that effect at the next meeting on Thursday, June 11th. Challenge Matches. It was decided, on the recommendation of the management committee, to issue a challenge for the Peace Cup and to attempt to arrange a home and home match with Thames. Referees’ Association. It was decided, in an attempt to start a Referees’ Association, that the management committee become the association, and that referees be asked to attend the meetings each Thursday evening. Playing Out of Union. The secretary was instructed to write to the Morrinsville Union, informing it that J. Headley was in the Plains territory, and could not play under an outside Union. Rough Play. A meeting or fne management committee was held following the general meeting to discuss the case of the two men ordered off the field during the match between Ngatea. and Turua on Saturday, May 30. The referee, Mr A. Cleave, stated that the two men in question, F. Howard and J. Riddell, were straggling on the ground .when he saw them, long after the ball had left the tight. Although both men appeared to be ’ laughing, he considered that something more serious would have developed if he had not caught them when he did. He thought, however, that he had perhaps been a little hasty in ordering the men off the field without first administering a caution. He thought that the men might be let off with a caution. On the motion of Mr McCowatt, seconded by Mr Cleave, and after the hearing of concurrent evidence, it was decided to caution the players against further rough tactics.
