THEFT AT KAIHERE.
FOOD REMOVED FROM HOUSE. MAORIS BEFORE COURT. At the Thames Court on Wednesday last two Maoris, Tommy Wilson and Billy Motu, were charged with breaking and entering a dwelling house on the Mangawhero Road, Kaihere, belonging to Mr L. L. Hunter, of Patetonga, and with removing a quantity of food. On the application of counsel for the defendants, the charge was reduced to one of theft. Defendants both pleaded guilty. It appeared that Mr Hunte.” s sons had visited the house on a,Thursday, taking with them -t quantity of food, which they left there in readiness for their future occupation of the house. When they returned the next Monday -they found that the house had been entered, and food and other ai-ticles to the value of 24s taken. The accused, on being questioned by the police, admitted having taken the food, but said they were forced to do so as their families were at a point of starvation. As Wilson and Motu were first offenders they were leniently treated, being fined 6s costs, and ordered to piake reparation of the stolen goods to a value of 12s each.
