DISTRICT NEWS.

HIKUTAIA. VALEDICTORY. A most enjoyable evening was spent in the Hikutaia. hall on Wednesday last, when the residents of the surrounding districts assembled to farewell Mr and Mrs R. W. Lowry.

Mr Lowry came to Hikutaia with his father 23 years ago, and he and Mrs Lowry have lived in the. township all their married life.

The hall was prettily decorated, the stage being arrayed with spring flowers. The night went swimmingly. The musicia.ns, led by Mr J. Fleming, seemed to be inspired, and the spirit of enjoyment prevailed. A special attraction was the vocal items provided by Mesdames P. Hague-Smith and A. George, Misses Gibb, Silvia, and Martin,. and Messrs. Foster, Gibb, Felix, and Tompkins. The winners of the euchre prizes were Miss A. Alley and Mr Forrest.

Mr W. H. Alley, who made the presentation, said that Mr a<nd Mrs Lowry had been true citizens, and in their long residence in Hikutaia had endeavoured to aid the district in every way possible. He presented them with a silk eider-down and silver teapot as small tokens to shows the esteem in which they were held. Mr Lowry expressed thanks on be*hallf of his wife and himself, and sajd he was sure that when he left he would not meet so many kind Friends and loyal neighbours; He had one. regret—he was leaving those friends. Mr M. Ellis, thanked Mr' Fleming, who had contributed the music. He also gave deserving thanks to Mrs A. W. Alley for her energetic secretarial work. The social was thoroughly appreciated, and it was in the. small hours of the morning that the people wended their way homeward. BOWLING CLUB. The annual meeting of members of the Hikutaia Bowling Club was held in the, club’s, pa.vilion, a. fair number attending. The annual report was presented and adopted. The club had a very successful year’s play, winning several inter-club matches, and iff the open tournament at Te| Aroha at New Ydar provided the runners-up, being defeated by the Ngaruawahia, club in the final. Local tohrnaments were won by C. W. Winder, singles* championship ; J. Thompson and I. M. Robinson, pairs. The club had to thank the. caretaker for the able manner in which he had prepared the green during last season. The night play under the electric light was fairly well patronised, and the club expressed satisfaction with the installation. Mr W. H; Alley was again elected president, notwithstanding his keen desirie to* be relieved of that duty. Other officers elected were: Vicepresidents, Messrs A. R; Robinson and W. K. Morrison ; secretary, I. M. Robinson; committee, Messrs M. R. Morrison, G. Avery, E. Elliot, R. R. Morrison, Allan Gubb, H. Valentine, H. Morrison ; representative on executive committee, South Auckland Association, and Goldfields Association, Mr A. R. Robinson; match committee, Messrs E. Elliot,, W. H. Alley, a,nd the secretary. NETHERTON. VALEDICTORY. An entertainment was Organised by the Netherton School Committee and held recently for the purpose of bidding farewell to one of the school teachers, Miss> McLeod, on the; eve. of her marriage. The function took the form of a dance ii.nd euchre tourtiament in the public hall, and the at- • tendance was large. Mr Rooney was at the piano, and extras were played by Mrs Scudamore, Miss'Halligan, and Miss Coldicutt. The euchre, tournament was won by Mrs. E. Williams and Mr E. Johnson. ,During the evening the chjiirmafa of the School Committee voiced the regret of the( people that Miss McLeod, had been prevented by Illness from being present at the gathering. He spoke of the- good qualities of Miss McLeod as a teacher, and of the loss the district and school would sustain by her departure. He then asked her uncle to receive a travelling rug on her behalf. On the following day Miss McLeod was the recipient of a case of stainless cutlery and a silver salad bowl from the parents, teaches, and pupils.
