CONCERT AT KEREPEEHI

QUEEN CARNIVAL EFFORT. AN ENJOYABLE FUNCTION. A. very largely attended and very enjoyable concert was held at Kefepeehi on Tuesday evening to raise funds for the Kercp-jeni-Ngiitea queen in the Catholic Church building fund queen carnival, which has been in progress for some time. A variety of vocal items and dances were provided, and these earned well-merited applause. Opening with a pianoforte solo (introducing many national, airs) by Mr W. J. Scrimegour, o f Thames, there followed a song by Mr J. Gribble, a, violin solo by Mr T. McAlister, and a song by Mr J. Neate. Mr Beeche, of Thames, contributed several comic songs, which were followed by a Maori trip a,nd a pianoforte solo, by Mr J. Rooney. Miss “Bubbles” Barrible delighted the audience with several dances, and Miss E. Kelly, of Thames, contributed several vocal items. Miss Charteris ■and two of her pupils (Misses Davies and McDuff) gave an exhibition of Highland dancing to the accompaniment of bagpipes played by the, Rev. Charteris. Several Scottish songs were then contributed by Mr L. McIlvride, of Thames, and these were followed by an exhibition of sword dancing by Miss N. Charteris, and another song by Mr J. Neate. Some light humour at the piapo was contributed by Mr W. J. Scrimegour, and some more, humorous songs by Mr Beeche concluded the programme.

When thanking the organisers of the function (Constable and Mrs Devereaux) the Rev. Father Dignaji, of Thames, apologised for the absence of the parish priest, and said that the Roman Catholies were numerically weak on the Plains, and the denomination was the only one without a church in the district. It had sections of land at Ngatea, Turua, and Kerepeehi, and the queen carnival was organised to assist in raising funds tor the building of a church. A church would cost £BOO, so there was need for unbounded generosity. The speaker thanked all those who had contributed items, and also the large number of people who had attended the concert.
