BRICK AREA BUILDING.

extension in iron asked for. APPLICATION NOT GRANTED. At the Borough Council meeting last night Mr F. E. F’att made application to erect an iron wall at the back of his shop for the purpose Of using it as a store-room. The cost would be £l5. Accompanying the application was a letter stating that the application was made under the hardship clause, section 88 of the by-laws. It was for the purpose of using this portion of his premises as a temporary storeroom until busine-s wa,wanted the extending of the building in brick. To do this at the present time would be an undue hardship to him, with no corresponding benefit to the community. Cr. Flatt said he would not take part iii the discussion, but that he would explain that each evening he had the trouble of shifting goods back into the shop. He had wanted the convenience of this for some two years, but until Mr Cullen’s application had been granted he had not had the. cheek to a,sk. The conditions had now changed, and he hoped the same consideration would be given him as had been given to Mr Cullen. Cr. Flatt then withdrew from the Council table. Cr. de, Castro said that he had great pleasure in supporting the application, to be granted under clause 88. Cr- Edwards, in seconding, said that he did not think it way necessary to bring up the matter of the previous application. Cr. Brenan also supported, and thought, that no harm could be done by granting the application. His Worship said that in his opinion the application must be taken under the hardship clause. On the motion being put, Crs. de Catsro, Brenan, Silcock, apid, Edwards voted for it, and the Mayor and Crs. Hare and Porritt against The Mayor declared the motion lost, as only four had voted for the application, and under clause 88 it required live councillors in support.

On Cr. Brenan’s motion it was agreed tha.t the applicant be .advised to present the application at next meeting - , when it was hoped theie would be a 'full attendance of councillors.
