NGARUAWAHIA 16 v HUNTLY 11. Excellent weather prevailed on Saturday when a senior match was played on the Recreation Ground, Huntly, between Huntly and Ngaruawahia, and a fair crowd of spectators was present. Play was fast and interesting and although Ngaruawahia had a good lead at half-time of 13 points to nil, Huntly made a good recovery in the second half and the game ended with a difference of only five points. Ngaruawahia proved the faster side and their smothering tactics often checked tjie Huntly movements before they had got well started. Had Huntly w thrown the ball about more smartly they would probably have scored more tries. As it was, the ball was too slow in travelling to the wingers, who were usually smothered immediately they gained possession. The Play. Huntly kicked off and play came back to midfield. From a scrum McBurney followed to Huntly 25 where the ball went out. Abbott kicked over Huntly line, but a force down saved. Huntly shifted the play and Whorsky looked dangerous, but was forced out at the corner. From the scrum, play went to the other end and Lee was caught in possession; but Ngaruawahia were penalised. Huntly had a free kick and the visiting backs gained possession and took play to Huntly 25 where the ball w r ent out. Ngaruawahia got the ball from the scrum and Robinson made a splendid run to score. Tittleton converted. Huntly took the offensive and Peckham made a good attempt, but Tittleton stopped him at the corner. W„ Tittleton relieved the position and took play to midfield where Whorskey secured, but ran out. The visitors attacked, and Kelly looked dangerous, but Huntly forced. Play travelled to Kuntly’s 25 where a scrum took place. The ball came to G. Tittleton who made a good opening and passed to Hill who scored a fine try. Tittleton’s shot at goal failed. A spell of even play ensued until nearly half-time. Following a series of scrums in Huntly territory, Kelly put in a good run, beating several men, to score between the posts. Abbott converted, and half-time came with the score: Ngaruawahia 13, Huntly 0. Ngaruaw ahia kicked off with a man offside. From the scrum at midfield Huntly attacked, but Tittleton returned to midfield. Timms ran to the visitors’ 25, but was checked. Lee carried play to Ngaruawahia territory where a scrum took place. Timms gained possession and ran over, Peckham failing with the kick. Play went to Huntly’s 25 where Whorsky secured and ran to midfield. Paki, Timms and Trautvettor were instrumental in taking play to Ngaruawahia’s territory. Lee secured and made a good opening, passing to Peckham who scored a good try. Lee missed with the kick. Play travelled up and down and Whorsky made a good run, but was grassed at the corner. Play returned to midfield when Huntly attacked again. Tittleton hung on too long • and was caught in possession. Soon after, Huntly had a free kick and took the offensive. An exchange of kicks by the fullbacks was followed by a scrum at midfield. Timms and Rayner took play back to the Ngaruawahia line, but the ball went out. Huntly kept up the attack and from a scrum near the line Peckham secured and scored a try which he converted. The game ended shortly afterwards with no alteration to the score. Mr Waring was referee.
