RUGBY FOOTBALL
SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNEY The Taupiri Rugby Union’s soven-a-side tournament was held at Taupiri last Saturday. Thirteen teams competed and the interest was sustained to the final game, which proved a thriller. The following are the results:— First Round. Renown B 13 v Huntly nil. Frankton A 13 v Gordonton 0. Renown A 13 v Orini 0. Taupiri 6 v Marist B 3. Rovers 3 v Ngaruawahia 0. Marist A 11 v Frankton B 5. Gordonton A a bye. Second Round. Frankton A 25 v Renown B 0. Renown A 6 v Taupiri 0. Rovers 3 v Gordonton 0. Marist A a bye. Semi-Final. Frankton A 17 v Marist 0. Renown A 10 v Rovers 0. Final. Renown A 8 v Frankton A 0. After their decisive defeat of Marists, Frankton were the favourites, but the local boys stuck, manfully to their work and more than held their own. The game was the best of the afternoon. The whistle was scarcely called for at all and the ball travelled up and down the field at an amazing pace. There was no score at halftime, but shortly after resumption, Broughton scored for Renown, after ; a line piece of concerted play in which the whole team took part. Peckham converted amidst deafening enthusiasm. Shortly before time, \V. Hart scored another try which put the issue beyond doubt. The best team won. The winning team consisted of A. A. Griffiths (capt.), Hart (3), R. Clout, K. Peckham, and L. Broughton. They were each presented with silver cups. The tournament was well managed by the committee, with Mr. F. Harris, chairman, and Mr. J. C. Christie, secretary. Four Hamilton teams competed, and the fact that a local team could win against such opposition augurs well for the forthcoming season.
