MATAHURU MURMURINGS AND WAITERIMU WHISPERINGS
By “Fernlcaf.” I understand that as a result of the dance organised by the Gaiety Girls, a very nice sum has been handed over to the Hawke’s Bay Earthquake Relief Fund. On the 10th ult., Mr C. Harrison of Matahuru, celebrated his 21st birthday and to mark this auspicious occasion, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Harrison gave a ball in our local hall, which was most enjoyable. During the evening, the all important birthday cake was cut by Mr. Harrison and duly handed round. We were pleased to sec one of the* first settlers in Matahuru, in Mr. D. McDonald, grandfather of the guest of the evening, who was paying a short visit to the scenes where he had spent so many years. The music was supplied by Mr. J. Allan and his merry men frae a wee place call’t Huntly, and right well they played. A sword dance by Messrs McDonald and R. T. Hill, violin solos and duets, a saxophone duet by members cf the orchestra and an exhibition of the Skater’s Dance by Miss Allan and partner, all added to the enjoyment of the evening. On the 20th Mr. and Mrs. J. G. N. East gave a very enjoyable bridge evening at their home in Waiterimu. The winner of the ladies’ prize was Mrs. L. Zank, who came home a short neck in front of the second lady, the third being a. nose behind. Mr. R. Ward annexed the gentleman’s prize, likewise by a neck, whilst a long neckseparated second and third. Miss E. Newton took the lady’s consolation pr ? ze, and Mr. A. F. T. Anslcy that for gentlemen.
