OBITUARY
MR. SAMUEL BROADBENT. It is with most sincere regret we chronicle Ihe death of Mr Samuel Broadbent. which happened as the result of an accident in the Rotowaro mine on Friday night. Born in I.arcashire 50 years ago, the late Mr Broadbent followed the occupation of a miner, and came to New Z-aland over 20 years ago, being employed in various capacities by the Taupiri Coal Mines, Ltd., during the whole of that period, and for continuous service must rank as one of the company’s oldest employees. During the disaster at Ralph's mine in 1914. the late Mr Broadbent was in charge of the Taupiri West shaft and with others took a prominent part in rescue work. He served during the Great War in the Tunnelling Corps and saw service overseas. Of a sunny disposition, “Sam,” as he familiarly was known, was widely known and popular with all classes of the community and his death will occasion sincere regret among a wide circle of friend-. To his sorrowing widow we tender our most sincere sympathy in her sad b reavement, a sympathy which will be echoed by many, many friends at the pissing of an upright and useful citi zen. The funeral which took place at Kimihia Cemetery on Sunday was very largely attended, all sections of (lie community being represented. The management of the Taupiri Coal Company was represented by Mr J. Watson, general manager, Mr Alec Penman, mine manager, and other staff officials. The Maoris’ tribute to the deceased was the playing of the “Dead March.” The Rev. C. J. BushKing read the burial service. The returned soldiers attended in large numbers under Maj <r Cald well, and Bandmaster Morgan sounded tho “Last Pas'.” Floral emblems were sent by all sections of the community.
