LEAGUE REP. MATCH
NORTHERN UNION (Tl» MATCH AUCKLAND RETAINS TROPHY. On Saturday, South Auckland journeyed to Auckland in quest of the Northern Union Cup, and before an attendance of about 10,000 put up a stiff fight for the trophy. The visiting forwards played a wonderful game, and on the day were superior to the Auckland pack, especially in the tight work. The city backs showed more combination than the visitor’s, and this was the deciding factor in the game. On arrival at Auckland the Southerners were met by Messrs. W. Taylor and McLean South Auckland delegates to the N.Z. Council, and Mr. I. Culpan, secretary of the Auckland League, who escorted the visitors to their hotel. After the match the visitors were entertained at a dinner given by the Auckland Rugby League at which Mr. Rhodes, chairman of that body, presided, and the usual toasts were duly honoured. As a result of this match the finances of the South Auckland League will benefit considerably, the percentage of the gate being on a fifty-fifty basis. THE GAME. The visitors lost the toss and Jones, who captained South Auckland (red, white and blue) kicked off against the sun. Rapid exchanges marked the opening play in which Mclntyre attempted to set his backs in motion. He sent the ball on to Delgrosso, to Seagar, who kicked deep. Tittleton received in subsequent play and made a sensational dash along the sideline before short punting, Simons clearing. The visitors’ forwards were putting plenty of vigour into their play headed by Traut vetter, Jones and Timms and it was only good defensive play by Delgrosso, Seagar and Simons that kept the local line intact. The visitors were having the better of the play and Rayner, with well-directed long range kicks was hemming the home team in their own 25, combining well with his backs. From a scrum in the home 25 Tittleton secured and threaded his way through the defence and scored. Rayner’s kick fell short. The success of the visitors roused the Aucklanders, and for the first time they crossed the halfway line. Mclntyre sent the ball through to I. Scott, who was robbed of the ball by Tittleton. The visitors’ winger kicked through, but again the city players pressed, Hamilton, Ruby and Skelton heading a vigorous rush, that ended in a force by Rayner. Auckland returned to the attack and from a scrum in the visitors’ 25 Mclntyre whipped out the ball the Seagar, to Brisbane. The latter side-stepped brilliantly and swung in under the posts as he was being tackled. Delgrosso goaled. Play fluctuated between the twentyrives until Delgrosso found the line well in the enemy quarter. Abbott intercepted a pass in his own half, and with a kick put the tricolours hard on the offensive. Loose play followed in the visitors’ territory, and ihe Jiall was kicked out to Brisbane, to L. Scott who forced his way ovei it the corner. Delgrosso failed with the kick. Fast following up by Pascoe resultid in the Waikato men being put hard on the defensive. Menzies, Jones Trautvetter and Stephenson swept play to the opposite end of the field; but L. Scott cleared to halfway. From loose play Menzies broke through with a brilliant dash, and in-passed to Whorsky, who was smothered, owing to lack of support. A try seemed certain but the pass went astray, and Brisbane cleared to neutral territory. Play was hard and fast, being confined mostly to the forwards. Tht Southerners had the home team penned on the line until Mincham and McIntyre cleared. Mclntyre, Seagar and Brisbane were prominent in a bright movement, but bad handling by the latter spoilt the bout. Half time came with the scores Auckland 8 South Auckland 3 SECOND SPELL. An exchange of kicks between the fullbacks marked the opening of the spell. Auckland attacked but lost the advantage through a breach. The visitors carried play to the Auckland line and a hard forward tussle took place. From a scrum Abbott sent the ball out to Whorsky, to Tittleton, who was well tackled by Delgrosso within a few inches of a try, and Auckland cleared. The visitors set up a spirited attack, Menzies, Timms and Stephenson being prominent, but List broke through and, with L. Scott and Brisbane supporting, cleared. Waikato continued to attack, although Auckland kept them from striking distance until Abbott penetrated the defence, and passed to Whorsky, who was smothered. South Auckland were awarded a penalty right in front and Rayner’s kick went under the bar. A determined attack by Auckland carried play to halfway, where Seagar secured and beat the defence with a blight run and then passed to Brisbane who beat Menzies and scored. Delgrosso’s kick failed. South Auckland now took a turn, Abbott, Whorsky and Tittleton giving good support to their forwards. A well-judged kick by Jones was mislielded by Delgrosso and Timms pick
ed up and ran over unopposed. Tittleton’s shot failed. Both teams were trying to open up the game which was confined mostly to the forwards. Seagar fumbled, and were penalised for hanging on and Tittleton landed a goal. The city backs changed the scene of operations, and Abbott forced down Play was even and hard in the closing stages, the final scores being Auckland q South Auckland , g ~ Mr. L.
