The first donation to the Greymouth Fighter Aeroplane Fund was £SO, made yesterday by Mr and Mrs Sam Stewart.

Head injuries were received by a bushman, Patrick Campbell, aged 20 years, of Bell Hill, while working in the bush at Bell Hill on Monday afternoon. He was admitted to the Grey River Hospital, where his condition was reported to be not serious.

An announcement setting out. the Government’s proposals concerning the compulsory war loan is expected shortly from the Minister of Finance (Hon. W. Nash). The Railway Department advises that £750 18s 8d has been contributed by the Railway Department’s staff to the National Patriotic Fund for the four weeks ended August 17th. The amount ' will be apportioned to the Provincial Patriotic Councils oil the basis of contributions from the respective districts.

Three additions have been made to the list of West Coast members of the Fourth Reinforcements of the Expeditionary Force, who are to enter camp shortly, all being for Infantry Company, at Burnham. Their names are J. K. Roberts, Af. J. AfcCormack and L. Knight.

A small outbreak of fire occurred about 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon at the residence of Air and Airs C. Sadler, lower Alarsden Road, Greymouth. The fire was caused by a gas copper, the chimney of which ended under a small shelf in the washhouse. Flames going up the chimney set fire to the shelf and spread over the surrounding walls and the roof.

It was received by Sir Harry Batterbee, the United Kingdom High Commissioner yesterday. • The delegate of the Court of Arbitration, Air J. A. Gihnour, S.M., yesterday made an order in the Arbitration Court at Greyiuouth extending the New Zealand Painters’ and Decorators’ Award to the Westland industrial district. The application for extension of the award was made bv the Westland Union, for whom Mr T). Paris appeared, and it was not apposed by the employers. An order was also made exempting Totheran’s, Ltd., Grey month, from the list of parties to the award, on the grounds that the firm did not employ any workers engaged in the industry, being solely engaged in tlm joinery trade. The application for exemption, the only one received, was not opposed by the union,

At the meeting of the West Coast Rugby Union executive yesterday evening Mr C. Ryan said that the Southern Club, Christchurch, had been in touch with him for a game on Saturday. He had told them he did not think there was a hope of playing in Grevmouth. Mr Jamieson said that they might go on to Hokitika, where the Sub-union would welcome a game. The emergency committee was empowered to arrange a game at Hokitika if possible.

A linen handkerchief 100 years old was displayed at Akaroa this week. This was procured from a sailor on H.M.S. Britemart, whose commander, Captain Stanley, visited Akaroa on August 11, 1840, to hoist the flag at Green’s Point when the Magistrates, Murphy and Robinson, exercised the first act' of sovereignty over the South Island. The handkerchief, or neck cloth, is of linen, about 18 inches square and red, with a. white floral design round the edges. It is now in the possession of Mr G. E. Murray, of Ivinoch, Little River, whose lato wife was a granddaughter of James Wright, known as the Baron of Whakamoa, who was whaling atWhakamoa in 1842. How James Wright came into possession of this relic is not known. The handkerchief is in a wonderful state of preservation.
