'Pei Press Association —Copyright)

WELLINGTON. July 13

A total of 21,061 applications for State rental houses had been received up to May 31 last, stated the l Minister of Housing (the Hon. H. T. Arriistrong).

Figures to show the extent of the department's operations in Christchurch and suburbs were quoted by the Minister as follows: Houses advertised for contracts, 1139 units; contracts let, 1099; completed and handed over for occupation, 591; houses under ‘construction, 505; contracts still to be let, 40 units. In addition to the bouses erected and under construction ,as shown, the department had arranged for the erection of eighteen houses at Blenheim for the use of the staff of the Royal New Zealand Air Fore®. /

“The Government Housing Scheme has been responsible for a tremendous development in some of New Zealand’s industries,” added the Minister. “Hie tile-making industry lias been compelled to multiply its output many times, and the use of Now Zealand clay and cement as roofing material has lessened the dependence of New Zealand on sterling funds. The Department of Housing Construction lias specified New Zealand gas and electric stoves, and has played an important part in the expansion of ,the electrical industry.

“Locally-made fibrous plaster and wall board lnr.s replaced im ported wall-boards.. An experiment was made with locally-make locks, hut unfortunately, production was not up to the sample. However, the department is always ready to specify New Zealand goods in their entirety when the quality is high-class and the price is fair. The department has also given substantial orders to the local makers ot electric light shades, etc., and has never lost- its ambition to finally produce an entirely “Made in New Zealand” house.

“The planting of hedges and trees on occupied sections continues to - be carried out. in the appropriate planting season, and tenants arc 'encouraged to provide lawns and improve their gardens and the general appearance of their sections.
