TOKIO, July 10. The paper “Ivokumin,” referring to ,an interview between the British Ambassador, Sir It. Craigie, and Mr Tani, of the Japanese Ministry, last? evening, said: “It is Mr Churchill’s intention to procrastinate, as long as possible over the British final reply, pending the consolidation of Britain’s Hong Kong and Singapore defences, and pending efforts to secure United States and Russian aid, after which lie will reject the Burma protest.” “SHENGKING” RELEASED. SHANGHAI, July 11. The-Japanese have released the ship “Shongking.” However., no final settlement has been made in the matter. .. Mr Butterfield and Air Swire announced that the. French and Japanese have reached an agreement on the “Shongking” dispute. Japanese will release the ship to-morrow, after removing the French ammunition, It is officially stated that the Japanese have joined the anti-American campaign. Right-wingers threaten to disarm American marines, unless they apologise. The Embassy spokesman said that officials did not intend interfering in the mounting anti-American campaign; Any reply short of an apology would be unsatisfactory. PRO-BRITISH MINISTERS. LOSE FAVOUR IN JAPAN. TOKIO, July 10. The newspaper, “Miyako Shimbun,” states: “The Imperial Household Minister, Mr Thunon Matsudaira, who is considered. to be among the leading Japanese pro-Britishers, is at present growing in public disfavour, lie has expressed his intention of resigning in order “to make a change in the atmosphere ol' the Imperial Household Department.” This event has a significance in view of tho recent resignation of M. Yuasa, who is also regarded as a proBritisher, and a conservative. i. The “Miyako” says Viscount Musliakio is likely to be M. Matsudaira’s successor. . . , ... _ .. . • A REPORT DENIED. /V/ SINGAPORE, July 10. Saigon reports denied the, reports published abroad, - that Baodai, Emperor of Annam, had been assassinated.
