BLENHEIM, July 9
Mystery surrounds an exceptionally heavy explosion which was heard by residents of widely-scattered areas of the Secldon district shortly alter 9 o’clock this morning. Searching inquiries have been made, blit so far the only thing definitely established is that an explosion did occur and that it was of extreme severity. It rattled windows in houses at Wairau Bar and Secldon, which are about 12 miles apart.
-Theories as to the direction and cause of tlie explosion vary widely. Persons in Secldon have the opinion that it was towards the sea, and this caused a thorough search to be made of the coastline' from Lake Grassmcre to the mouth of the Awatore river, but nothing which gave a hint- as to what had happened was discovered.
Residents in the Lake Grassmcre area think that the direction of tlie- explosion was inland towards Mount Tapunonuku, in Upper Awatere. It is known that an earthquake fault exists in the Awatere Valley, and many people consider that the explosion which was followed hv a long rumble as of a heavy fall of rock, must he concerned with this fault
