THE ANTARCTIC
AN EXPEDITION URGED. v United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). LONDON, July 30. Ernest W. Walker, a member of the British Antarctic exploration of 1937-9,‘urges in view of the despatch of Bryd’s Antarctic expedition to establish and permanently occupy three colonies, that Britain shouldconsolidate her interests, starting at the end of-September, because sb e will lose her possessions in Western Ross Sea Dependency, if America established a third colony at Little America, some hundreds of miles within the area of the Dependency. The cost of the British expedition would be £50,0C0, which is not yet forthcoming. Changes in sovereignty of the Antarctic might seriously affect £10,000,000 of the British whaling industry. Germany made an Antarctic claim early in 1939, and Russia and Japan are sending out expeditions in the coming season.
