Paying a hurried visit for the-pur-pose of providing work for men unemployed, owing to seasonal works closing down, Houjy;Re?‘C.'' iWebb interviewed, stated he had ' met local bodies and department officers, and had endeavoured to arrange for work as far as possible in and around towns for the most necessitous cases.
He'Was hoping the great hulk of the married men would be employed, whilst’ a considerable number would be obliged to take on scrub contract work,where the Government were subsidising' up to 751 per cent of the wages cost. The object of the Government in so liberally supporting this;- work; is:
to enable many farmers to" bring more land into production, and financial accommodation is being arranged through the State Advances Corporation.
The Minister added that the Government was anxious to co-operate with local bodies in assisting orchardists.' He hoped to provide an opportunity for everybody able to work; to receive work.
