A POISONING. (Per Press Association —Copyright). WELLINGTON, Dec. 12. The inquest on Walter Percival Carter, 50, whose body was found in a , car at Ohiro Bay, on iWvemoer 30, resulted in a verdict of suicide by inhaling carbon monoxide gas.

BODY RECOVERED. PALMERSTON N., Dec. 11. John Geddis Alien, aged 17, lost his life in the Manawatu river on Saturday. He and two other lads were shooting the rapids in canoes w hen Allen’s canoe overturned. . He came to the surface and appeared to go after the canoe, but went under again, and did not reappear. The body was recovered to-day. DEATH ON AORANGI. AUCKLAND, Dec. 11. The dearth occurred on Saturday aboard the Aorhngi,' winch arrived from Vancouver to-night of a passenger who was suffering from a severe illness,'Mr A. B. Coxcroft, aged 54, of Melbourne. He died in the ship s hospital and was buried at sea on Saturday night. Mr Coxroft, who was travelling bach to Australia after a trip abroad, is thought to have been assistant-lib-rarian at the Public Library, Melbourne. He was ill for the greater part of the voyage, spending most of the time in the ship’s hospital. CYCLIST INJURED. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 12. Head injuries were suffered by A. 'Stephens) ...of Kaituna, • when the motor-cycle he was riding ran into a ditch near Little River early on Saturday evening. Stephens was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital, and his condition was reported to be satisfactory.

EXPRESS DELAYED

NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 12

Held up.for live hours by a wash-out on the main trunk line between Wat mea and .Ongarue, the Auckland-New Plymouth 'express reached New Plymouth at 1,1.50 a.in. to-day, instead of at 7.19. The washout occurred after the Limited Express had passed, and was reported before the New Plymouth train reached Waimea. At VVaimea a truck full of sleepers was attached to the train and taken to the washout, where a repair gang worked for five hours before the train could be taken over.

LEAK ON MAUI POMARE

CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 12

a slight leak which developed while she was at Apia, the Government motor-ship Maui Pomare which arrived at Lyttelton this afternoon, from Apia and Niue, brought no passengers. She brought a full cargo of more than 9000 cases of bananas, the whole of which is to he discharged at Lyttelton. The cargo is in excellent condition. When asked for particulars of the leak, Captain L. C. Boulton, who is in command of the Maui Poniare, declined to furnish any information. The vessel is to be slipped at Wellington on . Thursday for repairs, and is to sail on Tuesday for the Islands. MAYOR OF WANGANUI ILL. WANGANUI, December 13. The Mayor. Air W. J. Rogers, took 111 last evening, and was admitted to hospital. He was operated upon,to-day for appendicitis.
