Gisborne was the only centre to win two titles at the New Zealand amateur boxing championships, which concluded on Saturday night, I). Heeney, the welterweight, retaining his crown, anti W. Shaskey taking the featherweight championship. Only one incident created dissatisfaction among the capacity crowd last night. It was the disqualification ' of K. Branch (Auckland) for striking AY. of the referee. I The Jamieson Belt for the most, scientific boxer, was awarded to J. | O’Connor of Christchurch, the light- , weight champion, who also annexed the Jamieson Cup and the Parisian Cup. The Auckland heavyweight, McHugh, possessing a devastating punch, j gave an outstanding display in his class, only C. Marsh of Greymouth, ( rivalling him in speed and in ringcraft. Marsh ran both the 1937 lightweight champion and the 1938 cham- , pions to close decisions. , ■ ..In the lightweight division, W. Lister took the title from his brother, T. . Lister. The winner was a ponderous fighter, with plepty of power, but little science, whose success was attributable, in some degree, to the hard j fight which, his brother had with Marsh ; (Greymouth). RAYNER DEFEATS McKAY; f BLENJIEIM, September 18Clarrie Rayner (Blenheim), 9.6, comfortably outpointed Brian McKay (Hastings). 9.5,, in a twelve-round professional boxing match last night, before a large audience. . Rayner had a winning margin in nine rounds. His punching.,-was. too severe for McKay, who, however, boxed well, after being knocked down in the first, roiind. Rnyner. forced the fight .all the way, with heavy rips to the body, and slowed up AfalCay over (the last /four or five rounds. The bout was spectacular and willing throughout, but the winner , was too experienced for his opponent.
