NEW ZEALAND TEAM WINS

SYDNEY, August 8.
The New Zealand basketball team arrived by the Wanganella. The manager, Mrs Muir, stated they had a delightful trip. The team plays the tirst match against New South Wales second team this morning, and departs for Melbourne this afternoon. The New Zealand basketball team to-day played a friendly game against the second New South. Wales team at the Sydney University ground. The New Zealand team was as follows:
Misses E. Howard, M. Tangye, J. Wilson, M. Howe, M. Matangi, E. Sinclair, J. Mitchell. The New Zealanders won by 19 to 16.
The winners were obviously at a disadvantage, they haying just left the liner Wanganella, and they also were unfamiliar with the interpretation of the rules by where the rides, differ in some respects from the New Zealand rules. The game was also played on grass. Ihe New Zealanders took a little time to warm up, but they , led by fi to 3 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, - however, the home team drew ahead, the score at half-time reading 8 to 7 in favour of New South Wales.
.New Zealand were definitely superior in the third and fourth quarters, and they added twelve points as compared with eight points scored by New South Wales. The New Zealand positional play was better than that of their opponents'. They were also nippier.
Miss Matangi played a splendid game, and Miss Tangve was also excellent.
