FLOOD DAMAGE
PLIGHT IN ESK VALLEY
(Per Press Association—Copyright)
NAPIER, April 28
Railway trains have resumed the ordinary time table on the southward run, the bridge at Waitangi being passed as fit for trains at slow speed.
All roads to the north are still blocked. It is not likely the Taupo road will be open till the week-end or later, l.ut at Prissington a detour will be necessary.
It is anticipated ’that the plight ol E)ik Valley is far worse than was anticipated. Many, settlers assert they will be compelled to walk off their farms, many of which are four to live feet under silt, but it is impossible, even now, to reach Eskdale, half way np the valley.
Hon P. C. Webb proposes making an inspection to-day. With the one exception of one detour, ten miles of the main south road is open.
