An announcement was made in a message from Auckland last week that Miss Rita Stacpole had broken the New Zealand intermediate girls’ 100 yards backstroke swimming record. This is challenged in Invercargill; The message stated that Miss Stacpole had broken the record of 77 4-5 seconds held by Miss Joyce MacDonald, of Invercargill, by three-fifths of a second. It is pointed out that Miss MacDonald beat her own time of 77 4-5 seconds; at Gisborne, on March 21, when she was timed to do 76 1-5 sec, which is one second faster than the time credited to Miss Stacpole. Miss MacDonald’s time at Gisborne also beat the senior record, of 76 2-5 seconds, held by Miss Edna Stocklev. ...
