BRITISH INDUSTRY TOO COSTLY
(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright).
LONDON September 23
The problem of the high cost of new tonnage was discussed by Lord Craigmylo at a luncheon following the launching of the Peninsular Co’s liner Strathallan. Lord Craigmyle expresses the opinion that the present rates of freight for tramp shipping, which alone justified to-day’s construction costs, would not endure over !o or 20 years. Therefore, it was essential, that costs should he reduced if shipping were to continue on a sound footing, and the stagnation and unemployment were to be averted. He believed that when this icarinaineiit rush \wis over, they would he able to get economic ships at an economic price.
Sir W. Craven said that Vickers Coy. were tendering for the two transpacific liners. Tlicv bad established a record in their history by launching eight ships in thirty-three days.
