IN MAN’S BODY MADRID,. September 16. With the assistance of an aitillery officer, a surgeon in an emergency hospital behind the Madrid lines, has .performed an amazing operation. A Spanish peasant soldier was hit by a 2in Mauser shell, which failed to explode, but remained in his body. The shell lodged just beneath a shoulder blade, After the surgeon had incised the man’s back, the artillery officer stepped w to the operating table. Exercising great care, he removed the detonator can of the shell. The surgeon then removed the remainder.

'Phe operation lasted four hours. The soldier is recovering.
