TO AID NAVIGATION. WELLINGTON, Sept, 19. “One special duty, laid on the Government is the provision of proper aids to navigation on our coasts,” said the Minister for Defence (the HOll. F. Jones) at the annual shipping smoke concert on Saturday night. Air Jones deputised lor the Minister for Marine'(the- Hon. P. Fraser). “The Marine Department has recently completed the installation of an up-to-date radio beacon on Baring Head. Another is in course of construction lit Cape Campbell, and these will he followed by one at Stephen Island, giving valuable service to ships using Cook Strait,” said Air Jones', outlining the Government’s plans ior improving shipping facilities on the New Zealand, coast. It was also the intention of the Government that when the radio beacons in Cook Strait were completed further beacons would be installed at Cuvier Island and Mokohinau to provide safe approach for shipping using the Hauraki Gulf and the Port of Auckland. Later the Government intended to establish beacons wherever experience showed them to be necessary.
