LAUNCH WRECK
LUCKY ESCAPE OF CREW. (Per Press Association—Copyright)
NEW PLYMOUTH, September 13. A miraculous escape from death was experienced by two New Plymouth fishermen, A. E. Internum and J. Goodwin, when the launch, Sicily, was wrecked in a westerly gale on the \Yaitara beach early this morning. The launch which caused anxiety by its non-return to New Plymouth yesterday. was heading for port last night, and when about 4 miles off Waitara a particularly heavy sea was shipped which swept the bulwarks and all loose fittings away, and tangled the anchor rope about the propeller. While the rope was being cleared, a second sea was shipped which tore the engine from its frame, and took away the rudder. The helpless craft was swept in towards the shore and narrowly missed destruction «n the Waitara river mole, and was carried broadside through the breakers to the only sandy piece of beach in the vicinity, She was benched at 1,30 aim.
