THEFT CHARGE
ORGAN GETS NINE MONTHS
(Per Press Association — Copyright)
CHRISTCHURCH. September 10
Pleading guilty to theft of nearly £3OO, while a clerk in the employ of the New Zealand Government, Russell Frederick Organ was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment with hard labour by Justice Northcroft this morning. “I would not be doing my duty if I admitted you to probation,” said His Honour. “You were in a position of trust. "Were you granted leniency, others similarly placed might think that the Court regards such offences as venial.”
The charge was a serious one. said I)r. Haslam. who appeared for Organ, but it was the first time accused had ever been in trouble, and his previous record was excellent. He was handling over £ISOO a week, his salary being £3. He had taken the amounts with the idea of making them good later, but his salary was too small to permit of that.
