PARTY OF SEVEN AT ARTHUR’S , PAS'S

CHRISTCHURCH, August 16.

A-party of-seven young men whose names are not yet known were . lost last night in The mountainstet Arthur’s Pass. They were last* seen at noon yesterday on the summit of Phipps Peak. The party is thought to be in the bush close to Blimit Peak. The lost men went To the Pass in Sunday .s excursion and were - only 'missed when the train was due to leave for Christchurch. . . .

A search was at once organised, eight members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club being sent from Christchurch and arriving at the Pass late at night.. This morning the searchers totalled 36, and an organised search was commenced once more. Vy,

Fears for the safety of six young men, members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club which were entertained When it was learned that they had not returned to Arthurs Pass last night, after having set out in the early morning on a projected traverse from Phipps Peak to Mount Temple, were removed when it was reported to-day That they had been found.

The members of the party were : F. Gillett, 1., Lawrence, R. Murchison, J. Clegg. J. Olliver, and G. Mandeno of Christchurch. They set out from the Pass at 5 a.m. intending to make a traverse from Phipps.-Peak-to Mount Temple and were seen yesterday at noon on the summit of Phipps Peak.

Search parties set out to-day and reported at noon they had sighted themissing men on Temple Col. It is hoped to bring the party into Arthurs Eass by three o’clock. AH are believed to be well despite the bitterly cold night. ...
