ANIMAL DISEASES.
RESEARCH WORK TO BE INCREASED. DUNEDIN, June 10. “The Government. is fully aware of the great losses that, take place in primary prduction through animal disease and the -need for increasing research work so that such losses can be brought down to the lowest possible level. For this reason the Government proposes to enlarge the scope of the work at the Wailaceville laboratory by increasing the accommodation and staff, so that the laboratory can deal adequately with all phases of animal diseases.” This announcement was made to the annual meeting of the South IsVind. Dairy‘ Association today by the Minister for Agriculture (the Hon W. Lee Martin). The erection of new laboratories had been approved at n cost of .£15,000 and inquiries were at present being made to secure the services of- skilled rc r search workers both for the laboratory and field research. To combat dairy cow .diseases, a concentration of effort was to be directed towards those various ailments that in the aggregate were reflected in tingreat wastage that occurred through a heavy replacement of i stock necessary, and of these the control of temporary sterility and mastit-s were the outstanding two on which work was to be- prominently directed.
