MEMORIAL HALL FOUNDATION STONE LAID. (Per Press Association—Copyright). DUNEDIN, May 14. Tributes to the memory of the former Leader of the Labour Party. (Mr H. E. Holland) were paid when the foundation stone, of the new hall, which is at present being built by the Caversham branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, was laid by the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Mr W. E. Barnard). The hall, which is to be known as the Henry. Holland Memorial Hail, is being erected - on a section leased, from (the Railways Department in the western side of the railway line at Caversham. The tentative plans provide for a-wooden .building 90 feet inlength and 40 feet wide, The main hall will be 60 feet long by 40' feet in width, with a stage and supper room at one end .and a commodious committee room and cloak rooms opening off the main entrance. The erection of the building is Being carried out by day labour, and with the funds already in hand as of a successful carnival, and eyery' prospect of more oeing raised, by an energetic committee, it is anticipated that the building will be opened free of debt. WELLINGTON FINANCES, * . • WELLINGTON, May 14. A debit balance of £1.562, compared ivith a credit of £792 for the previous year, is revealed in the Wellington tramway and bus account for the year ended March 31, 1937, The net effect is that the finances receded by £2354 during the year. The trains showed a profit of £3,505 and the buses a loss of £5.067.

The electricity department showed a credit; of £8,987,. compared with £43,343 at March 31, 193&. The Mayor (Mr T. C. A. Hislop), commenting on the position, said that tho tramways would have to he watched with the greatest care and expenditure would have to be controlled very carefully if increased fares were to he avoided. Referring to the Electricity Department, Mr Hislop said that the council had reduced the charges to the lowest rate in the southern hemisphere, and if it could keep on the right side, it could have no cause for complaint. It should he recognised, however, that the council could not now draw on the electricity account to assist its general, funds.

THEFT OF JEWELLERY GERALDINE, May 13. Jewellery vallued at about £IOO was stolen from the premises of Mr .John Mcllroy, watchmaker and jeweller, • of Talbot Street, Geraldine, either in the early hours of yesterday morning or late on Tuesday night. The discovery of the theft was made by Mr McTlroy when he returned to his shop after the morning celebrations on Coronation Bay. A safe containing diamond rings, money, and watches, valued at about £3OO, had not been tampered with. ORANGES. AUCKLAND. May 14. More than fi(XXJ cases of Californian naval oranges were brought to Auckland from Los Angeles by the Mariposa, the first of the new season’s exports from the Pacific Coast. The fruit is stated to have arrived in excellent condition and will he released on the wholesale market to-morrow. In view of the acute shortage which has persisted for some months a strong demand is anticipated. While it is difficult to predict prices it it expected that the new supplies will realise from 37s fid to 4os. according to the count, which is a considerable reduction on the rates which ruled during the height of the famine.
