DAVIS CUP

N.Z. BEAT CHINA

AUSTRALIANS WIN.

(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph-Copyright)

MEXICO CITY, April 30. . The Davis Cup match between Australia and Mexico began to-day. Results were: Quist beat Reyes 6/3, 6/1, 6/3. McGrath beat Tapia 6/2, 6/4, 6/4.

Reyes’ service was exceptionally weak. He was resolute, but he was unequal to Quist, who in the first set established a 5/0 lead before the Mexican rallied and fought back, winning

the next three in an amazing spurt of

speed and accurate placing. The Australian, who took the earlier games to love or fifteen, increased the pace, however, and clinched the set. He continued the pressure in the next which, despite Reyes’ determination and many deuces, only demonstrated the further disparity 'between, the players. Quist tired in the third and allowed the Mexican to amass a 3/2 lead. The Australian was listless and play was uninteresting with only a few good rallies. Both were netting and outing. Quist was compelled to throw all ?us energy into the ’finish of the match and left the court drenched in perspiration. Reyes, who is an Indian, was fresh.

THe match between McGrath and Tapia centred on the third set, when the Mexican assured a surprising 3/0 lead. He was playing accurate, well balanced tennis. The Australian, however, quickly terminated the spurt with a deliberate forcing game, leaving Tapia at sea. McGrath evened the score to 3/3. The games then alternated with the service until a break in Tapia’s ninth gave the Australian a vital lead, and lie clinched the l 'set on his own service handily. In the first set McGrath’s consistent scoring smashes and placements showed Tapia at a disadvantage. The Mexican seemed bewildered, but he settled down in the second and contested every game, many of which he deuced.

C. E. Sproule, the captain, said: “I am very pleased with the way the boys played in view of the job they have in front of them in a month. The Mexicans did not give of their best to-day. Reyes was a little nervous and Tapia lacks match play. The-Mexicans probably helped to bring about their own defeat by the kindness which they have been showing us since we .first arrived. McGrath’s hand is much better. He merely uses a slight tape bandage. Everybody in the party is well.” ‘ 1 ■ .

In the Davis Cup Crawford and Quist defeated Hilda and Hernandez 6/2, 6/3, 6/3. It was a straight-mid-court game. Crawford’s overhead smashes outelassed the Mexicans. The Australians broke through Unda’s service in the fourth and eighth games, and that of Hernandez in the sixth. Quist dropped his service in the seventh.

Crawford won the first game of the second set to love. Mexico won the next on the Australian's errorts. The eleventh and twelfth games produced brilliant rallies. The Australians put on the- pressure and ran out with the set.

The Mexicans fought hard in the filial set, but the Australians always had their measure and won comfortably.

In an exhibition match Crawford and McGrath defeated Bromwich and Quist 7/5. Bain stopped play in the second set, when the score was 2 all. Sproule said the members of the Australian team were showing quite satisfactory form. He hoped their winning streak would continue. The team will leave for Kew York to-morrow. The players will rest a few days and will practice for about eighteen days.
