EFFORT TO COMBAT ATHEISM SYDNEY, October 5. Organised atheism had l all the means of propaganda, and had the moral support of the Universities, the Rev Father H. W. Hurley declared at St. Mary’s Basilica ye.steruav. It \vas the intention, he added, to establish -in Sydney a branch of the Holy Name Society—an army of Catholic men to combat atheistic teachings, and to uphold the doctrine of Christ. The society, said Father Hurley, had been founded at the request of Pope Gregory in 1274, to counteract the evils of that age. There were corresponding evils -in the present day, including the denial of the divinity of Christ, attacks upon the sanctity of marriage, also perjury and obscenity.
