ARMED MIGHT
TWO DISPLAYS IN CHINA NANKING, July 19. 1 Two displays of military force have been made in North China this week—one a display of fighting aircraft here by-the Central Government, and the other a parade of motorised forces by Japan in Peking. Twenty-seven American bombing planes, bought recently by the Central Government, were flown over Nanking. In Peking, Japanese tanks, armoured cars, and a largo number of Japanese motorised troops, passed through the international quarter and even through the Legation'section of the city. The parade is interpreted as a gesture by Japan to China and the world that she is ready to resist any threat to her occupational troops inland. As for the South Chin a forces, they are no nearer starting their civil war, and are gradually being deserted by their aviators, several more of whom took off from Kwangsi and went over to Nanking. GERMAN ARMS FOR CHINA % BERLIN, July 19. Negotiations proceeding between Germany and China are expected to culminate soon in an agreement for the exchange of goods, including arms and munitions, for which Germany is granting China credits to the extent of £12,500,000. It is reported that the agreement la a strictly commercial one of long range, the objects being to maintain Germany’s war industries by means of an export trade after the peak period of German re-armament has been passed. Germany has explicitly assured Japan that the negotiations are not directed against her.
