QUICK FORTUNES
AMERICAN DROUGHT SEQUEL. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). CHICAGO, July 19. Brokers state that fortunes are being quickly made in the grain pits, due to the drought. A total of fifteen hundred million dollars of trading in wheat and maize futures has been reported since June 1. Many ten to fifty thousand dollars profits have been noted. Aleanwhile, the Government has reported that only half of the so-called “Dust Bowl”—namely, Texas, Kansas, Colorado, and Oklahoma —lias been seriously eroded. It is added that ill-advised farming practices are largely responsible for the erosion, and it is recommended that conservation measures be taken, involving precautionary crop planting, and contour tillage. Showers fell during the week-end from Alissouri to the Great Lakes.
