YOUNG TEACHERS
SOLE CHARGE POSITIONS
A SHORTAGE OF APPLICANTS
WELLINGTON, June 9
A 'difficulty being experienced by certain education boards in securing teache.s for sole charge of Grade 1 schools and Grade 1 assistant positions in rural schools was commented on in an interview to-night by the Minister of Education the Hon. P. Fraser. “At the beginning of the year,” said Mr Fraser, “it was decided to keep all certificated trained teachers not then holding permanent positions in employment as supplementary teachers juntil they had an opportunity of securing permanent appointments. Unfortunately, a number of these young teachers are not applying for positions as vacancies occur, with the result that education boards are faced with the alternative of employing uncertificated and retired teachers when there is really
no necessity for them to do so. “Education boards are therefore be-
ing asked to notify individually all these additional teachers that, unless thev make reasonable efforts to secure permanent positions, or accept relieving work wherever it is offered, it will be ne:essary t > determine whether the policy of retaining su-h teachers on the salary list will bo continued.”
