BRITAIN’S DEBTS

TO UNITED STATES (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 9. A White Paper issued in London gives the text of the correspondence between the United States Governmen and the British Embassy in Washington regarding the British war debt.

The Department of State addressed a note on May 22. to the British Ambassador fSir Ronald Lindsay), transmitting a statement o) the amounts diie half-yearly since 0 une 15, 1933 and including June 15 next, under the debt agreement of 1923, and the moratorium agreement of 1932, gild reiterating the willingness of the United States Government to discuss any proposals which the British Government might desire to put forward as to payment. The statement shows that the total amount due on June 15 next is 85,670,765 dollars.

In acknowledging the note and its accompanying statement on June 7 the British Ambassador said that his Majesty's Government had explained in its note on June 4, 1934, the reasons for which it wa s reluctantly forced to suspend payments. Those reasons, unfortunately. were no less valid now than they were Ihen.

“His Majesty’s Government desires me to express appreciation ot pour assurance that the United States Government is ready to dis-

cuss any proposals in regard to discuss any proposals in regard to pay-, rnent which may be put.' forward,” continued the Ambassador’s reply, “and T am instructed to assure you in return that his Majesty’s Government will be glad to reopen negotiations whenever the circumstances are such as to warrant a. hone that a satisfactory i;fesult : -Tnight be reached.”
