MORE CHRISTIAN MISSIONARIES

Bishop Matsui, of Tokio ) pleaded yesterday for .more Christian missionaries for Japan, when speaking in an address in the Town Hall. Christianity had made a definite impression in Japan, although it was slow, he said. There were only 300,000 Christians out of a. total population of 90 millions. ' , •
j Only 50,000 of Tokio’s five million 1 were Christians. “The life of Japan is largely determined by the life of Tokio. If you save. Tokio } you save Japan,” . said Dr Matsui.

“We want more missionaries; „ ,tl\e '•sooner the better. It is said-that missionaries are not needed in Japan, while Buddhism, Confucius ism, and Bushfdoism (hold sway. But within the last few years, many have turned from these teachings to Christ ianity.
“Jap- 1 .]! to-day is divided into 10 dioceses, and the Tokio diocese, lias a Bishop. a Japanese clergyman, and three English missionaries. “We have 19 women workers, four Japanese, and the rest English.”
