OWNERS BLAMED
LOSS OF 29 LIVES ON TANKER
(United Press Association—By Electrh Telegi aph—Copyright.)
LONDON, ecember 11. Finding that the hiss of the oil tanker, La Crescenta, in the Pad tic last year, with a crew of twenty-nine, was contributed to by wrongful acts and defaults of the owners of the Crescent Navigation Company, Lord Merrivale ordered it to pay £3400 with costs, including £650 to the officers’ and seamen’s organisations.
] Lord Merrivale said the La Croscenta was repeatedly overloaded in 1034. The master overloaded at the express bidding of the owners. He realised the peril, but his employment was precarious. The. vessel was overloaded on the last voyage, when the engines failed and rendered the ship helpless. She inevitably sank in precipitous seas.
| Lord Merrivale is drawing th e attention of the Board of Trade to the question of revision of the Merchant Shinning Act to provide penalties, which could be promptly enforced, for overloading.
