PACIFIC UNITY
N. Z. -JA PA N CO-OP KRAT ION SOUGHT.
WELLINGTON, May 30. Hopes for greater Lo-operation between New Zealand and Japan were expressed last night by Dr K. Abe, fhe leader of the .Japanese, economists, who will leave for Vancouver after a brief visit to the Dominion.
Dr Abe said his party had been able to obtain a general opinion of business and farming thought, in the North island at least, and every member had been impessed by the line scenery and the natural resources of the country. It seemed that New Zealand had a very promising future. New Zealand’s reliance on dairy production had been fully noted, continued !))• Abe. While dairying was the prominent factor at present, he considered there were possibilities to he found in production, in his opinion, should he exploited with a view to the extension of markets. At the moment New Zealand seemed to depend rather too much on England as an outlet for its produce.
Dr Ahe considered that there was promising scope for New Zealand in the sale of its goods in the East. This oireumstcmje did not apply mdrely to Japan, hut the matter generally would require the attention of a competent delegation on behalf of tyke Dominion. As far as he could see, the needs of the East in trade were not too well understood in New Zealand.
Another matter of importance, he sa.id, was unity in the Pacific. There was the opportunity to get away from the jealousies of Europe, and, in spite of what was suggested in some quarters, Japan, wlijjeh had her own development to bring about, had nothing but the friendliest feelings toward Australia and New Zealand. Japan, as was the ease with any other virile nation, was entitled to pursue her national purpose, but that did not mean that the co-operation of other countries in the. Pacific was not welcome!. Dr Abe said there should he no suspicion of Japan’s purposes.
