A new highway code, whj[cili in limiiy respects modifies, in ’the light of recent experience, that inaugurated in 1./01, was approved by the House of Commons
The Minister of Transport, Mr L. Hore-Belisha, said that a copy of the new code, which lays down rules for the /conduct of all road users, including pedestrians, would he delivered tree to every householder in the country. If the code was observed there would certainly be a reduction in road'accidents.
Measures already taken, said Mr Hore-Belisha, had, together with the growing traffic (consciousness of the community, produced very good results. During the current’ year there had been a considerable reduction in road a Undents in spite of the phenomenal increase in the number of vehicles usiiio' the roads.
The reduction in fatalities in London during the last nine weeks, said, the Minister, was no less than 30 per cent ami in injuries 15 per cent, while the increase in the number of vehicles, ’licensed was over 12 per cent. Title code was, he added, an effort to , contribute to public safety, and it embodied suggestions received- from every quarter.
