SUSTENANCE MEN FINED

AUCKLAND, May 30

The sequel to a raid hy detectives on the waterfront on May 3, was heard in the police court to-day, when ten men where chrgeaiwdt vbgk qemfwyx men were charged with a breach of the Claming Act by playing two-up. The seven who appeared, all sustenance men, -pleaded guilty. The police said that, owing to com* plaints of -gambling on the waterfront, a constable in plain clothes mingled with the players on five days. Mr F. W. Schramm, for the men, said defendants were what were known as “seagulls,”—mot members of the Waterside Workers’ Union, and they waited, to pick up jobs outside the union. Sometimes they went days-with-out a job. One man who admitted owning a dice and box, was fined £lO. The other nine were each fined 10s, and were allowed a week in which to pay.
