CHRISTCHURCH CLUB RAIDED

Sixty-five persons were arrested by a party of about twenty policemen, including uniform and plain clothes constables and detectives, under Chief Detective Dunlop when they raided the premises of the Gloucester Club in Gloucester Street at 11.30 o’clock last night. The charges will refer to keeping, and being found, a common gaming house. Three car loads of police arrived from the station and parked their cars some way from the club. The raid came as a complete surprise to the men in the club. As many of the men as possible were bailed otu, but the rest were kept in custody till this morning. Secret systems of signal bells, and all manner of paraphernalia, which the police will allege was used for gaming, and miscellaneous material, including tables, chair, and electric wiring equipment, wore packed into a police van in the early hours for conveyance to the police station. Several constables ripped the boards oft’ the stairs, an t { uncovered the signal bells.

The men a l 'rested during the raid included some trotting drivers, some licensed jockeys, and some Government servants. A jockey was discovered hiding in a small cupboard.
