(United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright).

(Received this day at 1.15 p.m.) PEIPING, January) 23.

In view of the announcement two days ago that the Jeliol-Cluihar border dispute had been settled, great surprise has been caused here by the receipt of Chinese dispatches from Kalagan, reporting that a combined Japanese-Manchukuo force, two thousand strong, supported by artillery and aeroplanes, launched a vigorous attack on the Chinese lines between Kuyuan and Tsuhihkow last evening and again to-day.

•J aipanese planes dropped bonfos while two Chinese cities were shelled by artillery The Japanese offensive wa s launched against the Chinese troops as the latter were withdrawing from the disputed zone.

Tsuhihkow, one of the main passes on the Great Wall, was considerably damaged. The Chinese, though offering a stiff resistance, were subjected to a merciless artillery bombardment. The extent of the casualties is unknown, hut consternation reigns in north China.
