SHIPPING LEVY

PAYMENT AT COMPENSATION

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright).

LONDON, January 22. A scheme lias been drawn up by an official of til© International Shipping Conference based on the principle of the shipowners’ paying a levy.

This is to be based on the tonnage engaged tin the international cargo carrying trade. It is to lie collected and administered by an International Committee, which is to compensate the owners for the withdrawing of efficient ships, or for scrapping obsolete ships. The Conference recognised that this alone would not adequately meet the shipping depression, which is due to the world’s economic difficulties. Therefore the Conference urges the Governments of the world to intensify oai effort to restore international trade.
